Concept cars : carte blanche for creative innovation

Both fun and futuristic, projects carried out by Matra always open up new ground for the world of the automobile. For Matra, an original idea is a progressive idea, often sweeping aside customary habits. This is a manufacturer where many projects have contributed to progress in entirely new automobile concepts.

P28 : the bike-car

Dating from 1982, this concept was inspired by one of Jean-Luc Lagardère’s great ideas – a pals’ car. This car offers young people a machine that is both fun and safe. It was created within the legislative context of that time. Today, this context is much broader and the commercialisation of such a concept appears more and more likely.

P43 : the roadster revival

The P43 is an early-90s roadster. At the time, this category had disappeared from the market for legislative and safety reasons. This youthful, sporty car never made it into production but the concept itself came into fruition with the Mazda MX-5.

M25 : the dragster

With the M25, Matra celebrated 25 years in automobiles and inaugurated vehicles with modern-day acceleration. Weighing just 650 kg, the M25 clocked 400m from a standing start in 12.3 seconds and 0 to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds. The M25 probably inspired quite a number of vehicles.

Zoom : the electric folding car

Ever since 1982, Matra wanted to prove that it was possible to design an electric car. The Zoom is a prototype with attractive performance – a top speed of 120 km/h and a range of 150 km. The wheelbase was adjustable in order to be able to park perpendicular to the pavement, making it a truly folding car.

Espace F1 : the Formula 1 Espace

To celebrate 10 years of the Espace in 1994, Matra transformed an Espace into a Formula 1 car, with 10 cylinders for birthday candles. The floor pan was cut away to house a V10 820hp engine, a sequential gearbox and automatic attitude control. With a special front end, one-off brakes and aerodynamic spoilers, it reached 300 km/

P55 : back-to-back

To improve the survival space in the passenger compartment, Matra and Renault thought up a vehicle entirely focussed on safety (fixed front seats, reach-adjustable pedals and steering wheel). This one-box city car, with the front and rear seats placed back-to-back boasts plenty of room allowing for maximum storage space.

M72 : leisure vehicle

With the M72, Matra invented a new motoring concept, open to anybody over 16 years of age with the “Quadricycle” version limited to 20 horsepower. The M72 offered a different approach to mobility and leisure. Not only open to the outside world and the environment, but open also to a new customer base and a multitude of uses, this concept car brings with it the freedom and flair of its designers. The M72, an open topped two-seater, changes tack, going for streamlining and authenticity. Somewhere between car and bike, open to the skies on the open road, the M72 offers a panoramic driving viewpoint and direct experience of the elements – the wind, the sun, the smells…. The driving sensation comes first, but without compromising safety or the environment.
